Common Health-Related Questions

Why do you need to know my health history?

While a health condition won’t disqualify anyone from going on an HXP trip, awareness of a Builder’s health situations/limitations allows our team to accommodate them. Based on your health information, we may follow up to make sure you’re good to go. Certain trips are more physically taxing, difficult to accommodate food intolerances, or mentally strenuous and we want to make sure we’re setting participants up to succeed.

Does HXP require a physical for this checklist item?

We don’t require a physical, but we do require a doctor (preferably your primary physician) to confirm your health history. If you haven’t had a check-up in the last year, your doctor may want to see you for a check up before signing off.

What if I can’t get a doctor’s appointment until after the due date (May 1st)?

If your doctor’s verification gets turned in a little late, that’s okay! Please make sure that you fill out your health history in the meantime so we can begin to prepare for you to be on the trip (this is especially important for food allergies and/or dietary restrictions).

Please submit your doctor’s verification submitted at LEAST one month before your trip is set to leave.

Why do you need my immunization records?

For this upload, please submit a list of general immunizations that you’ve received. If your trip requires a Yellow Fever vaccine (Ghana and Zimbabwe) or has COVID-19 requirements, you can include those immunizations in this item.

Per our Vaccine Policy, we do not require that any HXP participant receives a specific vaccine, but we will reference this record if there is a medical emergency during the trip (typically, if you’re up to date on Tetanus).

If you have not received any vaccinations, please upload a document stating this.

If you are a Parent Builder and don’t have record of your general immunizations, please list any vaccines that you think you have an submit that document.

I don’t have food allergies, but I do have dietary restrictions—is this where I should list that information?

If there are any special food-related accommodations, we’ll pass this information on to our local food providers and make sure they get you appropriate meals. In addition to listing any food allergies or dietary restrictions in the health form, please let your Trip Leader know so we can make sure providers understand your restrictions.

Some food options are limited or unlabeled, so it will be your job to monitor what you eat during your trip. Most of the time, local food providers are able to accommodate those with food allergies or restrictions, but bring snacks that you can eat in case you are unable to eat a certain meal.

What if I don’t have health insurance?

HXP’s Insurance covers Builders traveling internationally for what happens during the trip. For Builders traveling to domestic locations, you will use your own personal health insurance in case of an emergency during the trip.

HumanitarianXP travel insurance includes:

  • Medical insurance
  • Medical evacuation
  • Security evacuation
  • Lost baggage
  • Baggage delay
  • Trip Delay
  • Trip Interruption
  • Personal property

HumanitarianXP travel insurance does not include:

  • If you decide to cancel your trip at any time for any reason**
  • If you become unable to travel due to sickness or any other reason

If you are not insured, please submit a document that says you are self insured and agree to pay for medical costs not covered by HXP.

My doctor never got the email, what should I do?

This is a bug that we’ve commonly seen! For this reason, we’ve removed the feature that allows you to send the Health Form from HXP.

To send your health form to your doctor, click “download” (step 6), then send them to your doctor to fill out. Email the form, send it via an online health portal, or print it out and bring it to them in person. Once this has been completed by your doctor, please upload the document to your Builder Checklist in the Health Info section. You can only submit one file, so make sure all the pages are in a PDF.

I filled out the form, but now I can’t move forward—what should I do?

Download the form again! Once you’ve downloaded the form, you’ll be able to move forward.

Based on my health, my doctor will not approve me to go on a trip, what’s next?

Please reach out to us directly to talk about medical concerns that would affect you going on a 2023 trip.
