2024 Project Story: Tonga Fua’amotu

On January 15, 2022, the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano erupted and caused catastrophic damage, including a tsunami. Residential buildings, hospitals, schools, infrastructure, agriculture, and forestry were destroyed and totaled around $90 million in damages. In addition to the structural destruction, this disaster had effects on tourism and agricultural yield, which resulted in great economic stress to families in communities across Tonga.

It is estimated that at least 300 homes were destroyed, which displaced hundreds of families. Many have struggled to rebuild due to lack of materials and funds.

This summer, HXP Builders will construct homes for displaced families that don’t have the money to rebuild on their own because of the volcano, but also impoverished members of the community whose homes are in need of repair. These residential structures will have a direct impact on the lives and opportunities for these families and will be able to support generations to come. Together, we will work to provide warm, safe homes that they can enjoy.
