Worldwide, Peru was one of the countries most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. From the capital to rural towns, Peru locked down in an attempt to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Life was put on hold, which presented major problems for education. According to Innovations for Poverty Action, “In Peru, high school dropout rates continue to be a significant problem. At the national level, 12 percent of children leave school before age 13, and 17 percent do not finish secondary school.” Covid-19 has amplified this issue as, during the pandemic, students attempted to complete their studies from home. However, not all individuals had access to the technology or internet to do so.

The lack of education in Peru is a significant contributing factor to its poverty. The pandemic has magnified economic and educational issues making it difficult for children to attend school. The demand for education in Peru has always been high, but schools are unable to accommodate the number of children who want to attend.

This summer, HXP Builders will be constructing classrooms for a community in the heart of Lima. The school currently operates above full capacity, due to makeshift classrooms that have been deemed dangerous for students. Right now, the school operates on a first come, first serve basis, each day. As a result of Builders’ work this summer, 50 to 60 additional children in the community will be able to attend school and gain an education in a steady environment.
