2022 Project Story: Ghana Accra

In 2019, Bill and Melinda Gates wrote a letter about some of the biggest surprises they have seen in Africa, many of which HXP has also discovered. Here’s what they wrote:

“The world keeps getting older, but Africa stays (nearly) the same age. In every part of the world, people are living longer. As more children survive to adulthood, women are having fewer kids than ever before. . . except in Africa. The median age there is just 18. In North America, it is 35. If sub-Saharan Africa commits to investing in its young people, the region could double its share of the global labor force by 2050, unlocking a better life for hundreds of millions of people.”

In Ghana, 25 percent of the overall population are illiterate and 60 percent are never enrolled in lower secondary education. This means that almost half of primary school aged children are dropping out of school before they reach secondary education (around 6th grade).

This summer in Accra, HumanitarianXP Builders will be partnering with a local nonprofit to continue adding classrooms for an overcrowded school. A few years ago a Ghanian couple living in Italy decided to move back to Ghana to give back to their homeland. They started a school in an impoverished community that didn’t have access to education and have been running it as a nonprofit ever since. They are self-sustaining relying on pig and chicken farms and won’t turn away any students who can’t afford schooling fees. We’ll be adding on 3 classrooms to help more students attend the school. As you construct classrooms, you will interact with and come to love the children you’re serving. Your work will change the trajectory of their lives, and their love will change the trajectory of yours.
