Safari Tips
- Mornings on safaris are cold, make sure you bring a light jacket! You’ll also want to bring a pair of binoculars so you can see everything.
- Bring small amounts of bug spray and sunscreen in your carry on so you have access to them during first weekend sightseeing.
- We suggest bringing some snack with you in your carry on so you have access to them during the trip.
Location-Specific Variations
Temperature: Hot, Dry, 70°-85°
Checked Bags/Sightseeing: You will not have access to your checked bag before you go on your sightseeing day trip. Make sure you’ve got everything you need in your carry on and personal item.
Our Pro-Tips:
- It is hot in the day, but can get cool at night, so make sure you’ve got shorts for time off the worksite, but also bring a windbreaker/sweatshirt for evening activities.
- Make sure you bring swim goggles, safety glasses, and personal first aid kit stuff (our first aid kits only have enough materials for emergencies).
- You will not need a headlamp/flashlight!
Temperature: Hot, Humid/Rainy, 75°-85°
Checked Bags/Sightseeing: You will not have access to your checked bag before you go on your sightseeing day trip. Make sure you’ve got everything you need in your carry on and personal item.

- You’ll need to drink a lot of water on the worksite. If you get bored of just drinking water, we suggest bringing some flavoring packets/drops to switch things up. If you get drink mix with added electrolytes, that a bonus! We really like this brand.

- You won’t need rain boots and you’ll probably be fine without a blanket (unless you get really cold), but we suggest bringing a few sweatshirts and warmer clothes for early mornings and evening activities.

- It is COLD! Make sure you bring a big coat, sweatshirt, beanie, warm pants—whatever you need to stay happy. It gets chilliest at night, so you’ll want your plan your outfits for evening activities this way.
- Builders that went to Malawi last year wished they’d brought more snacks, so if you’re a picky eater, consider bringing some treats you love. For more snack-packing tips, check out this blog post.

- Make sure you’ve got plenty of electrolyte packets (these are our favorites) and snacks for the worksite (more snack tips here).
- We suggest bringing safety glasses for the worksite and two pairs of work shoes if your group is working with foundation laying/lots of cement.
- You’ll go through a lot of socks! To avoid bringing tons of pairs, pack some powder laundry soap and plan on hand-washing them in the sink.

- Credit cards are not widely accepted in Zimbabwe, so plan to bring cash ($50-200, depending on what kind of spender you are). They use USD, so you won’t need to exchange it. Bring smaller bills ($1-20) so you won’t have to break them.
