2022 Covid Blog: Malta

COVID Travel Requirements: Malta

Requirements at a glance...

  • COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements: Booster dose REQUIRED (you must have received this dose at least 14 days before your trip start date) (or had your last dose of the vaccine no more than 270 days before departure)
  • Type of test(s) needed before departure: N/A, we are fully vaccinated
  • Mask requirement: Italy is VERY strict about masks. FFP2 or KN95 marks are required on your flight to Italy and in all indoor and outdoor public places. Please plan accordingly and pack enough masks to cover travel and first-weekend sightseeing.

Other Pre-Departure Tasks:

  • Bring a physical copy of your COVID-19 vaccine card
  • CDC vaccination cards must be verified through the VeriFLY app to be accepted as a valid vaccination certificate. This should be done at least 72 hours before you begin to travel to Malta. The VeriFLY app is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
  • Prior to travel, Builders are required to fill out a health form (more information below). This will be filled out at the airport with the help of the Trip Leaders.

We know you’ve probably had a few questions about COVID-19 restrictions that will affect your trip. This blog will help answer those questions, and outline exactly what you need to know before you leave for your trip.

Should I quarantine before I go?

We strongly suggest that you self-quarantine one week prior to your trip to help ensure a negative test result. If you do have COVID-like symptoms before your trip and test positive, we will do our best to put you on a later trip, but there is no guarantee this will be possible. You would need to pay for your new trip in full and there would be no refund for the original trip you were scheduled on.

Do I need to get tested before I leave?

No test is required for your trip. If you’d like to test before your trip, you’re welcome to get tested anywhere that provides approved tests: pharmacies, doctor’s offices, testing companies, etc. For same day testing options, refer to the link below.

If I get a positive test result before my trip, can I get a refund?

You do not need a test before you go unless you want one. As stated when you registered, there will be no refund for your current trip if you test positive or are unable to acquire a negative result before departure (see our COVID-Response page for more information).

Will I have to take any more COVID tests once I'm on my trip?

No COVID tests are required upon arrival unless travelers shows extreme symptoms. The U.S. recently announced that Covid tests are no longer required to return to the U.S. at the end of your trip. All money that has already been paid for these tests will be refunded to you from HXP.

COVID Vaccine Requirements

The COVID-19 vaccine is required for all 2022 HXP participants. Additionally, the booster dose is required for all travelers coming to Malta. You will need to bring your physical vaccine card with you on your trip. Do not laminate or modify your vaccine card in any way.

If you are not fully vaccinated or bring a counterfeit vaccine card you will not be allowed on your HXP trip.

Malta requires the booster at least 14 days prior to the trip in order to be considered fully vaccinated. We strongly encourage you to stay up to date with the current news within Malta. Updated COVID requirements can be found here.

The Malta government has authorized Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Nuvaxovid vaccines.

Are there any other COVID requirements?

Two health forms are required. Builders will need QR codes from these health forms for both Rome and Malta.

  1. VeriFLY Application – this is the app where you upload/verify your COVID vaccine card. Please do this at least 72 hours before leaving to ensure the QR code comes back in time.  You will need to enter in your arrival and departure dates with the time. See list below:
  2. June 4 KM613 / FCO-MLA 10:00-11:25 June 16 KM612 / MLA-FCO 7:35-9:00
  3. June 18 KM613 / FCO-MLA 10:00-11:25 June 30 KM612 / MLA-FCO 7:35-9:00
  4. July 2 KM613 / FCO-MLA 10:00-11:25 July 14 KM612 / MLA-FCO 7:35-9:00
  5. July 16 KM613 / FCO-MLA 10:00-11:25 July 28 KM612 / MLA-FCO 7:35-9:00
  6. July 30 KM613 / FCO-MLA 10:00-11:25 August 11 KM612 / MLA-FCO 7:35-9:00

Both Rome and Malta require masks in public spaces both indoors and outdoors. You will need to bring protection masks (FFP2 or KN95) as well as other well-fitting masks. FFP2 or KN95 masks are required on your flight to Italy and all public places (so make sure to bring a few in your carry-on). In Malta, you can wear any kind of mask.

What happens if I test positive while on my trip?

If you test positive for COVID-19 while on your trip, you will be required to quarantine at your own expense . We recommend obtaining health insurance to cover this potential cost, in case you test positive while in-country.

You've got this!

Now take a deep breath. We know it may seem like a lot to figure out, but we’ll have you out serving on your trip without any issues in no time!

With love,

Your HXP Team
