We know you’ve probably had a few questions about COVID-19 testing and regulations before and during your trip. This blog will help answer those questions, and outline exactly what actions you need to take before you leave.

Should I quarantine before I go?

We strongly suggest that you self-quarantine one week prior to your trip to help ensure a negative test result. If you do test positive, or do not receive a negative test result in time, we will do our best to put you on a later trip, but there is no guarantee this will be possible. You would need to pay for your new trip in full and there would be no refund for the original trip you were scheduled on.

Do I need to get tested before I leave?

A negative PCR or antigen test is not need to enter Portugal. HOWEVER, if you have been vaccinated or gotten the booster more than 270 days before your departure date, you will need to get a negative PCR or antigen test to enter Portugal.  Follow this link to know where to get a PCR test.

When should I take my test?

MPORTANT! Please read this section VERY carefully. If you fail to test at the correct time, you could be blocked from entering. We have carefully outlined your specific window for testing so that you won’t have any issues upon arrival.

The test must be taken within 72 hours of your arrival time, keep reading for your trip’s arrival time.

Will I have to take any more COVID tests once I'm on my trip?

Yes, you will have to take two additional tests during your trip. All these tests will be coordinated by HXP and administered as a group. You will pay for these tests in advance in the “Pay for Your Trip” tab of your Builder Portal.

  1. To re-enter Portugal as you travel home, you will take a rapid antigen test, 48 hours before departing Cape Verde ($22 USD).
  2. In Portugal, after leaving the airport to visit the temple, you will take another rapid antigen test so you can return to the United States ($30 USD).

If I get a positive test result before my trip, can I get a refund?

As stated when you registered, there will be no refund for your current trip if you test positive or are unable to acquire a negative result before departure (see our COVID Response page for more information).

COVID Vaccine Requirements?

The COVID-19 vaccine is required for all 2022 HXP participants. You will need to bring your physical vaccine card with you on your trip. To get into Portugal, you will need to present your vaccine card to the airline.

In order for your COVID-19 vaccine to be valid, you must have had a booster shot OR you must have received the last dose of your vaccine no more than 270 days (9 months) from the last day of your trip.

If you are not fully vaccinated or bring a counterfeit vaccine card you will not be allowed on your HXP trip.

Do not laminate your vaccine card, they may not accept it.

Are there any other COVID requirements?

Masks are required in all public spaces.

What happens if I test positive while on my trip?

If you test positive for COVID-19 while on your trip, you will be required to quarantine at your own expense . We recommend obtaining health insurance to cover this potential cost, in case you test positive while in-country.

You've got this!

Now take a deep breath. It may seems like a lot to figure out, but we’ll have you out serving on your trip without any issues.

With love,

Your HXP Team
